Abstract

In folk medicine, the infusions of Ligaria cuneifolia (Lc) are used to increase blood fluidity and decrease excess plasma cholesterol (Cho). Our objective was to analyze the cellular and plasmatic factors that affect blood fluidity at low flow speeds, estimated by erythrocyteaggregationkinetics on hyperlipemic rats during 7 and 10 days of treatment with the extract enriched in Proantocianidins from Lc (PLc). Adult male Wistar rats (aged 70 days, n=24) were fed with a high-fat diet. Then, control rats were administered intraperitoneally each 24hr with either physiological solution or PLc 3mg /100g body weight during 7 and 10 days (n=6 each group). In day 8 and 11, respectively, they were anesthetized to obtain blood samples by cardiac puncture. In serum, we determined cholesterol (total, HDL and LDL) and triglycerides by using enzymatic methods. In blood, erythrocyte aggregation kinetics was evaluated using an optic method obtaining two parameters that estimate: size of aggregates (T) and speed of aggregation (V). Cellular factors: it was calculated the distinction of shapes by optic microscopy and Morphological Index adjudicating an index according to classification of Bessis. Stiffness Index was determined with a filtration method. Treatment with PLc shows a lipid-lowering effect on treated rats during 7 and 10 days, with a significant decrease in the erythrocyte aggregation improving blood fluidity, without producing changes in cellular factors. We have obtained a fraction enriched in Proantocianidins that decreases cholesterol and triglycerides favoring blood fluidity at low flow rates and decrease erythrocyte aggregation speed.
