The manuscript provides a brief review of the events leading to the development of the electrocardiogram. Starting from ancient Greece, in the person of Thales of Miletus, we highlight the pioneering experiments of Luigi Galvani, which led to concepts such as animal electricity, followed by other approaches such as the action potential, its initial records, and the publication of the first “electrogram”. All of this was further crowned with the great improvement applied by Einthoven, both artifactual and interpretative, which laid the definitive foundations for its clinical translation.
